barking gecko
Barking Geckos are a nocturnal terrestrial species that doesn’t need a large amount of floor space to live comfortably. A typical housing setup for a trio should include a minimum floor space of 14” X 21” with floor heating on one end that will allow a temperature gradient for the geckos to regulate their body temperature. The height of the enclosure is less important than the floor space since these geckos are not climbers.
bearded dragon
The harsh, spiky appearance of these lizards belie their normally placid temperament. If approached in the wild, the bearded dragon's usual response is to freeze and rely on its camouflage. If further threatened they puff themselves up, extend the 'beard' under the throat and open the mouth wide to reveal the bright yellow lining. If picked up, they will continue to struggle but will rarely bite. At a total length of around 55cm, the grey-brown eastern bearded dragon is an impressive animal.
jacky lizard
The Jacky Lizard (also known as the Jacky Dragon or the Tree Dragon) belongs to a large genus of Australian Dragon lizards. It is pale grey to dark brown in colour with black patches along the middle of the back and two paler stripes on either side of these two dark patches.
lowland copperhead
The head of the lowland copperhead is small and not obviously distinct from the body. They normally grow to a length of around a metre but on some Bass Strait islands lengths of 1.7 metres have been recorded. The body colour is quite variable, ranging from black through brown to a dull brick red. The sides are usually paler than the back. The most distinctive feature is the white barring over a dark background on the lips. This snake is highly venomous.
earless dragon
The Grassland Earless Dragon is a dragon lizard. All dragon lizards have small, rough scales (that don’t usually overlap) and well-developed limbs; they are often fast moving. In earless dragons, theear opening is covered by skin. The Grassland Earless Dragon is about 150 mmfrom nose to tail tip, and mottled light grey andbrown in colour with three pale longitudinalstripes. The under-surface is white, sometimes with fine dark speckling, and there is occasionally a yellow flush on the chin and neck. There is a short row of small spines on the nape of the neck.
brown tree snake
The brown Treesnake is a member of the Family Colubridae, a diverse assemblage of primarily harmless snakes, and is native to coastal Australia, Papua New Guinea, and a large number of islands in northwestern Melanesia. The species occurs on both large and small islands, extending from Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia through Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and into the wettest coastal areas of Northern Australia. Individuals of this species have been discovered on several extralimital islands, but the snakes on Guam represent the only documented reproductive population outside the native range.
pygmy mulga monitor
A small monitor species of central Australia ranging from the Western Australian coast through to western Queensland and eastern South Australia. They are well adapted to these arid areas leading a mostly arboreal life in the stunted desert trees sheltering in hollow branches and beneath loose sheets of bark rarely venturing down to the ground.
thorny devil
The strangest of lizards is the Thorny Devil. This is the only species in its genus. The lizard's body has conical spines all over, including spines above each eye and a hump behind its head which is spiny. The tail is also spiny. Its spines make it easy to identify. The color changes on the Thorny Devil's body from yellow to reddish brown to black, depending on which type of soil it is crossing. They change colors to be camouflaged and makes it easier for them to hide.
perentie
The perentie is the largest lizard on the Australian continent and, with a maximum length in excess of 8 feet, one of the largest lizards in the world! There are three perenties at the Australia Zoo: Ledge, Crinkle and Two Spots. Ledge, the male, is about 10, while Crinkle and Two Spots, females, are 8 and 5 years old respectively.
